You can't send the MC to the bench though only the other members. With other boss fights you could usually figure out the gimmick mid-fight and adapt, maybe do a restart or 2. It would make sense if literally any other part of the game required this much preplanning and strategy, but the rest of the game is fairly easy. Unlocks Koma Sabaki, which lets you swap out party members on the fly mid-battle whenever it's Joker's turn. Hifumi is a Shogi champion, and let’s just say it’s gone to her head. But for that to happen, you need to unlock the Confidant and max out her Rank. The timer isn't actually there to put pressure on the player, it's there to prevent the player from getting stuck fighting the same wave of bots for an hour. Players can romance this beautiful and skillful Shogi player, increase the Confidant Rank and enjoy 6 incredible abilities.
I have no idea how you could possibly beat that fight (without a ton of grinding) without setting the difficulty to Merciless, having at least 4 single target Psy Items, a Strong AOE Psy Persona for Joker, and Haru in the lineup. When I recommend P5R to people I specifically tell them to look up a guide when they get to Okumura's Palace to save them the frustration.
